The Landmark Eight-Vessel VLEC Project with INEOS Group Reaches Successful Completion

  • Pacific Gas (Hong Kong) Holdings Ltd. (‘Pacific Gas’) has successfully concluded its landmark eight-vessel very large ethane carrier (VLEC) project with global chemical giant INEOS Group following the official delivery and commercial debut of the 99,000-cbm Pacific INEOS Chocolate on June 25.

  • High-level executives attended the delivery ceremony, including Liu Kai, general manager of Taiping & Sinopec Financial Leasing; Lin Qingshan, vice president of Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd; Li Maozhong, chairman of Shandong Marine Energy Co., Ltd; and Lu Jiongjiong, president of Pacific Gas.

  • The final delivery marks the culmination of Pacific Gas’s long-term, win-win partnership with INEOS, which began by pioneering the construction and operation of the world's first VLEC featuring Type-B cargo tanks. Through this project, we have successfully bridged the gap between the chemical industry and deep-sea shipping, creating a highly integrated international supply chain for ethane and a scalable blueprint for future cooperation between Chinese owners and global chemical charterers.

  • All eight ships in the series were constructed by state-owned Jiangnan Shipyard and feature the yard's proprietary "BrilliancE®" Type-B cargo containment system. The development of this independent technology broke a foreign monopoly on liquefied gas containment systems, representing a major technological breakthrough for Chinese shipbuilding. Furthermore, the vessels are equipped with ethane dual-fuel main engines and shaft generators, meeting Phase 4 requirements of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). This advanced design reduces sulfur oxide emissions by 99% and carbon emissions by 18%, allowing our fleet to maintain peak economic efficiency while meeting the industry's strictest environmental mandates.

  • Pacific Gas, which has been aggressively expanding its footprint in deep-sea gas transport, described the completion of the INEOS project as a major corporate milestone. It also represents the full implementation of China's first global, world-class ethane ocean transport venture. Looking ahead, the company said it will continue to focus on the global energy shipping sector by optimizing and upgrading its fleet with green, smart, and low-carbon technologies while deepening integration across domestic and international industrial supply chains.
